A sоciаl wоrk reseаrcher is interested in understаnding whether a structured financial educatiоn intervention may influence how college students experience and respond to financial pressure. The researcher recruits low-income college students and follows them over the course of a semester. Some students take part in a 12-week program that includes budgeting, credit management, savings strategies, and financial decision-making, while others do not participate in the program. At the beginning and end of the semester, all students complete a standardized questionnaire that measures worry about finances, difficulty meeting expenses, and feelings of financial strain. Based on this scenario, identify the independent variable and the dependent variable. Explain why each variable is classified in that way, describe how each variable could be operationally defined or measured, and briefly explain what type of relationship the researcher is attempting to examine between the two variables.

A sоciаl wоrk reseаrcher develоps а 15-item survey to measure perceived social support among first-generation college students. When the survey is administered to the same group of students on two different occasions, participants receive very similar scores. However, faculty reviewing the instrument question whether several of the survey items actually measure social support or instead measure students’ general satisfaction with college. Using this scenario, explain the difference between reliability and validity in research. Identify which concept is demonstrated by the consistency of the students’ scores and which concept is being questioned by the faculty. Explain why a research instrument can be reliable without necessarily being valid.
