Prisоn Security Levels Assignment Cоurse Textbоok: Criminаl Justice Todаy: An Introductory Text for the 21st Century, 16th Edition by Frаnk Schmalleger Introduction Correctional institutions in the United States operate under different security classifications based on the seriousness of the crime, the offender’s risk level, behavior history, and escape risk. Security levels determine how correctional facilities are designed, how inmates are supervised, and the type of offenders housed within each facility. For this assignment, students will examine Figure 13-6 on page 453 in the textbook. This figure identifies several security level classifications used in U.S. prisons. Students must review the figure and explain each security level in the exact order shown in the book. Students will also research real prisons in the United States that correspond with each security level classification. Assignment Instructions Using Figure 13-6 on page 453, complete the following assignment. Your answers must be numbered and follow the exact order shown in the figure. For each security level, students must include the following information: 1. Identify the Security Level Write the name of the security level exactly as shown in Figure 13-6. 2. Description of the Facility Explain the characteristics of that type of prison in your own words. This may include security features, inmate supervision, physical layout, or control measures. 3. Inmate Classification Explain how inmates are classified into this level of security. 4. Type of Offenders Housed Describe what types of offenders are typically housed in this level of prison. 5. Prison Prisons are long-term correctional facilities operated by state or federal governments. They house offenders who have been convicted of crimes and sentenced to longer periods of incarceration.
