I wanted that money—and I wanted everyone to think I had built something perfect. So I hid the leak I found during practice. [2] Meanwhile, Jo had borrowed the caretaker’s only garden key to prepare the beds. When it disappeared, she retraced her route, checked the supply cart, and asked two classmates to help. Returning it mattered to her; the caretaker had trusted her to open the garden each morning. [3] Minutes before the judges arrived, Jo found the key beneath the cracked filter I had thrown into a bucket. She held up both objects. “Were you going to mention this?” [4] I reached for the key, but she kept the filter. The caretaker waited at the garden gate. The judges were crossing the courtyard. I had a spare filter in my bag, but replacing it would reveal that I had hidden the problem. [5] Draft sentences for later revision: “I wanted to win I had hidden the leak.
