BOT 2011C — Plаnt DiversityFinаl Exаminatiоn: Mоdules 1–11Tоtal: 100 points Instructions: Answer all ten questions in your own words. Use short, organized responses that address every requested part. Explain biological processes rather than only listing definitions. 1. Evolution, Adaptation, and Reproductive Isolation — 10 points Two populations of the same plant species occupy different environments. Over many generations, they develop different inherited traits and begin flowering at different times. Explain how natural selection could contribute to differences between the populations. Describe how differences in flowering time could reduce gene flow and contribute to reproductive isolation. 2. Phylogeny and Classification — 10 points A classification based on visible plant form conflicts with a phylogenetic tree supported by DNA and several anatomical traits. Explain how convergent evolution could cause this disagreement. Distinguish homologous traits from analogous traits, and define a monophyletic group. 3. Photosynthetic Origins and Aquatic Ecosystems — 10 points Explain how cyanobacterial photosynthesis contributed to increasing atmospheric oxygen. Describe the endosymbiotic origin of chloroplasts and give one supporting piece of evidence. Then explain how photosynthetic algae support aquatic food webs. 4. Bryophytes and Seedless Vascular Plants — 10 points A moist forest contains both mosses and ferns. Compare these groups in terms of vascular tissue and dominant life-cycle generation. Explain how vascular tissue allows ferns to grow taller and why both groups still require water for fertilization. 5. Pollen, Seeds, and Seed-Plant Reproduction — 10 points A pine tree and a flowering plant both reproduce through seeds. Explain how pollen reduces dependence on environmental water for fertilization. Describe how seeds protect and support developing embryos, and compare where seeds develop in gymnosperms and angiosperms. 6. Domestication and Crop Genetic Diversity — 10 points Farmers select plants with desirable inherited traits. Over time, a genetically uniform crop variety replaces many local varieties. Explain how artificial selection changes crops over generations. Describe why low genetic diversity can increase vulnerability to disease, and propose one way to preserve crop diversity for future food security. 7. Habitat Fragmentation and Plant Populations — 10 points A continuous forest is divided into small patches separated by roads and development. Explain how fragmentation can interfere with pollination or seed dispersal. Describe why small, isolated plant populations may lose genetic diversity over generations. 8. Conservation Strategies and Population Recovery — 10 points A rare plant species survives in only a few small populations. Describe one in situ conservation strategy and one ex situ strategy that could help protect the species. Identify one measurement researchers could use to evaluate whether its wild populations are recovering. 9. Invasive Plants in Florida — 10 points An introduced plant, such as Brazilian pepper or melaleuca, spreads through a Florida habitat and displaces native vegetation. Distinguish an introduced species from an invasive species. Describe one characteristic that can help an invasive plant spread and one way its spread can affect native organisms or ecosystem processes. 10. Invasive-Plant Management and Restoration — 10 points Land managers remove invasive plants from a site, but native vegetation does not recover quickly and some invasive plants return. Explain why removing invasive plants alone may not restore an ecosystem. Describe one follow-up action that could support native plant recovery, and identify one measurement to monitor restoration success. Grading Criteria Each question is worth 10 points: Biological accuracy — 4 points: Facts, mechanisms, and biological terms are correct. Application and integration — 3 points: Concepts are connected and applied to the question. Scientific reasoning and justification — 2 points: Explanations support conclusions rather than only naming terms. Clarity and organization — 1 point: The response is understandable, organized, and addresses the requested parts. Responses are evaluated on accuracy and explanation, not length.
