FACEBOOK AND THE ETHICS OF ANGER On Octоber 3, 2021, fоrmer Fаcebоok employee Frаnces Hаugen revealed her identity on 60 Minutes as the whistleblower who copied thousands of documents while employed at Facebook. Haugen asserted these documents prove Facebook knowingly allowed, and even encouraged, hate speech and divisive speech to perpetuate uncensored on its platform, sometimes with violent, global consequences. Haugen stated Facebook makes more profit the more its users engage on the platform, and anger and hate create higher levels of engagement.  First, watch the 60 Minutes report here: If the video freezes and does not restart, you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Lx5VmAdZSI Facebook executives declined 60 Minutes’ request for an interview but responded with the following statement: “every day our teams have to balance protecting the right of billions of people to express themselves openly with the need to keep our platform a safe and positive place. We continue to make significant improvements to tackle the spread of misinformation and harmful content. To suggest we encourage bad content and do nothing is just not true." "If any research had identified an exact solution to these complex challenges, the tech industry, governments, and society would have solved them a long time ago." Apply What You Have Learned: You sit on the board of directors of Facebook (Meta). After watching the 60 Minutes report, complete the following assignment based on your last name. Secondly, apply that theory to Facebook, and decide whether Facebook’s board should implement algorithms, or other safeguards that have already been developed, to prevent/reduce hateful, divisive speech on its platform. In addition to your yes or no answer, you must be specific in explaining how your answer complies with the utilitarian theory of ethics (how you arrived at your conclusion), including applying each of the principles and practices you identified in part 1 of your response to the Facebook question. Response must include a meaningful citation to the assigned supplemental reading (not textbook).
