He is 55 years old, obese, and his father had diabetes mellitus and a history of heart disease and died at age 62 of complications of diabetes.  This patient’s fasting blood sugar is 145 mg/dl and 157 mg/dl on two different days.  His cholesterol and triglycerides are also elevated.      This patient meets the American Diabetes Association criteria for diabetes mellitus.
