In the mid 1970s, major cities started implementing “enhanced 911” systems, which provided 911 dispatchers with the caller’s location automatically. Internationally, many countries have selected their own three-number combinations for emergency service, though Canada also uses 911. Britain implemented its 999 emergency telephone system on July 8, 1937, while New Zealand introduced its 111 emergency number in September, 1958. Australia started using its “000” emergency number in 1961. The countries which make up the European Union (EU) selected 112 as their universal emergency number, though some that had existing numbers, like Britain, continued to operate their original number along with the 112 designation, at least for a period of time.
