As Student Government President, I have spent the past year meeting with students, faculty members, and campus staff about ways to improve student success. Again and again, students have explained that time management is one of their biggest struggles. Many are not lazy or careless; they are overwhelmed. A recent campus survey of 300 students found that 71% said an extra weekday without scheduled classes would help them complete assignments, attend tutoring, or work additional hours. Several community colleges in other states have also experimented with four-day class weeks and reported stronger attendance on scheduled class days. This change would not mean less learning. Classes could still meet for the same total amount of time each week, but the schedule would be arranged more efficiently. Students would have one weekday available for studying, working, appointments, tutoring, or family responsibilities. For many students, that extra day could be the difference between falling behind and staying on track. We should support a four-day class week because it recognizes the reality of students’ lives. College should challenge students, but it should also give them a fair chance to succeed. Answer the following questions: A. What is the main argument of the persuasive message? B. Write a thesis statement for a rhetorical analysis essay about this persuasive message. Scoring Breakdown for Part Two This part of the exam is worth 79 points total. Question A - Main Argument: 15 pointsTo earn full credit, clearly explain the main point the message is trying to make. Do not just say “it is about school” or “it is about a four-day week.” Explain what the speaker wants the audience to believe or support. Question B - Ethos: 16 pointsTo earn full credit, identify a specific example of ethos from the message and explain how that example supports the speaker’s argument. A strong answer should connect the example back to the overall goal of the message. Question C - Pathos: 16 pointsTo earn full credit, identify a specific example of pathos from the message and explain how that example supports the speaker’s argument. A strong answer should connect the example to the audience and explain why it might be persuasive. Question D - Logos: 16 pointsTo earn full credit, identify a specific example of logos from the message and explain how that example supports the speaker’s argument. A strong answer should explain why the example helps make the message more convincing. Question E - Thesis Statement: 16 pointsTo earn full credit, write a clear thesis statement that could be used in a rhetorical analysis essay. The thesis should identify the message’s overall argument and explain how the message persuades its audience. A strong thesis should be specific and should not simply say, “This message uses ethos, pathos, and logos.” General Expectations Your answers should be written in complete sentences. For questions B, C, and D, make sure you include both: a specific example from the message an explanation of how that example supports the argument Do not just identify an appeal. Explain how it helps the message persuade the audience.
