We'll use оur оnline textbоok, pictures, discussions, аnd streаming video - but the best imаges will be those you notice with your own eyes and ears, outdoors and away from the electronic screen. Geography is the discipline of the outdoors, be it in the city or in rural areas. Spend this semester observing the scenes around you, and try to place what you see into context of the topics discussed in the book. There are religious, political, economic, and many other factors that helped shape the scenes you observe each day. You will choose one place for close observation during the semester and this is the place where you determine in writing which place/area you will observe. This can be your particular neighborhood in which you live or work or any other neighborhood that you’d like to get to know in more depth as long as you can access it easily. For several weeks, a short report is required on some aspect of that place, based on the topic being discussed in class during these weeks. These reports are consolidated into a neighborhood portfolio that provides a wide-ranging, in-depth evaluation of that one place using a geographic lens. In choosing your future observation area make sure this isn't only modern subdivision. Such a subdivision can certainly be part of your area but it is best if you include a core beyond just a strip mall. It can be a town or even a section of a town but make sure there is some variety in terms of what people can do there. People usually live somewhere, go shopping, go to school, go to a restaurant and the like. It would be best if you could also upload a local Google map of the area.
