Questiоns 1-4 аre bаsed оn the fоllowing pаssage. A person who is not alert and aware of what is going on is said to be in an altered mental state.  Diabetic emergencies, seizures, poisoning, lack of oxygen and head trauma are all causes.  A seizure is a convulsive body movement brought on by a random discharge of electrical impulses by the brain, the most dramatic of which is the grand mal seizure.  The patient loses consciousness and experiences generalized body stiffening, the “tonic” phase, for 30 to 60 seconds and then violent jerking, the “clonic” phase, for 30 to 60 seconds.  Generally, the longer a seizure lasts, the greater the chance of a complication such as poor respiration or vomiting.  Following a seizure, the patient may be in what is called a postictal state, seemingly asleep and almost unresponsive.  This is because the body is recovering from the massive discharge of energy.  This state may also include agitation and combativeness.  An absence seizure is when a person loses consciousness for just a few seconds, typically staring blankly ahead.  Patients experiencing this type of seizure are usually unaware they are having one.
