In this essay, first explain why, in past 50 years, the richest 1% have greatly expanded their share of national income and wealth, while the working class has struggled to maintain decent incomes or generate much wealth. Then describe the connections you see between growing income and wealth inequality and the US government’s failure or unwillingness to provide health insurance and other more generous social benefits to everyone. Conclude by considering how current and future inequality impacts public trust and confidence in US democracy.
