BBS Inventor Dies at Age 78 1 | Ward Christensen, co-inventor of the computer bulletin board system (BBS), 2 | passed away at age 78 in Rolling Meadows, Illinois. He was found at her home on Friday 3 | after friends called for a wellness check. Christensen, along with Randy Suess, created 4 | the first BBS by themself in Chicago in 1978. This marked the beginning of a new era of 5 | online communities, which still influence how people interact on the internet today. 6 | In the 1980s and 1990s, BBSes introduced many computer users to online 7 | gaming, message boards, and social interaction before the internet became common 8 | for everyone. It also helped start the shareware gaming industry, which led to 9 | companies like Epic Games.10 | Friends remember Christensen as a modest and humble person. Although he 11 | created an important part of digital history, him did not seek fame. He worked for IBM 12 | for many years and stayed out of the spotlight, feeling content with he’s role in 13 | technology and the niche he created for himself.14 | Christensen and Suess came up with the idea for the BBS during a snowstorm in 15 | 1978. They wanted to stay in touch with theirs computer club, the Chicago Area 16 | Computer Hobbyists’ Exchange, when travel was difficult, so the two of they built the 17 | system together in just a few weeks. This system allowed computer owners to dial in to 18 | a machine and leave messages for others to see later.19 | Christensen’s work changed how people used computers to communicate. 20 | While he stayed humble, him contributions were recognized. In 1992, he received two 21 | Dvorak Awards and later, the Pioneer Award from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. 22 | Even in his later years, Christensen continued to interact online without showing off his 23 | achievements, staying true to hisself and his humble nature.
